SQUASH(ED)
BOX

In
the summer of 1990 a vicious tornado destroyed the O'Haigy family farm
south west of Chicago. The youngest daughter, Sarah, whilst searching
for salvageable items in what had been the zucchini patch, discovered
the remains of a puzzle which must have been in the attic for years. The
puzzle consisted of 64 blocks which were glued into 12 pieces. Apparently
the pieces were originally made from 3/4" cubes and fit together
to form a 3" cube. However, the pieces had been crushed by the tornado,
so that each block was only 1/2" high. The box had been demolished
and the pieces were no longer together in solved form. Sarah expected
that the new pieces would fit into a 3" x 3" x 2" block,
but was unsuccessful in doing so. She contacted an internationally known
puzzle expert in the Chicago area, who discovered a solution to the puzzle
and believes that no other truly different solution exists.
Copyright Bill Cutler 1990 The above version of the puzzle was modified by TW by adding the single unit piece in order to facilitate a neat, out of solution, packing of the pieces. The object is to place the single unit piece into the space in the base of the box and then pack the remaining pieces into the box flush with the rim. |
